Prescription Drug Disposal Bill Ready for Governor’s Action
MONTPEILIER – On Tuesday, the Vermont Senate passed H.11, “An act relating to the discharge of pharmaceutical waste to state waters.” The bill was committed to and voted out of the Fish, Wildlife and Water Resources committee earlier in the legislative session and amends current statute to comply with federal regulations regarding prescription drug take-back programs.
Freshman Rep. Dustin Allard Degree (R-St. Albans City) reported the bill to the House and has been a vocal leader both on the campaign trail and throughout the legislative session in raising awareness and finding solutions to reducing prescription drug abuse.
“This problem is here in Vermont and in my hometown; it threatens the very fabric of our community. The serious increase in prescription drug abuse and the crime that comes with it has changed the way we live in St. Albans,” Degree said.
“H.11 will provide permanent locations for Vermonters to dispose of unused medications in a timely manner and in doing so, help reduce the amount of drugs which may otherwise end up on our streets,” he added.
“This is a good day for Vermonters’ in the fight against the prescription drug abuse,” Degree said. “This is an important first step and I pledge to continue to work with members from both sides of the aisle and in both chambers to combat this serious problem.’
