As you are well aware, the effects of Tropical Storm Irene have left southern Vermont in a state of emergency. Many towns are still without power and due to massive flooding, roads and bridges have been washed out isolating whole communities from the rest of Vermont
Those of us in the Northwestern part of the state were lucky. While we’ve experienced some minor flooding and wind damage, our part of Vermont was spared from the type of devastation that has been characterized by many as the worst natural disaster to ever hit the state.
As crews work around the clock, many are still struggling through this incredibly difficult time. Local food shelves are being emptied as volunteers work to ensure that no Vermonter goes without clean water to drink and food on the table.
These organizations need our help to replenish the shelves and to meet this important need as the recovery effort move into the future. Over the next eight days here in our community, we will be collecting non-perishable food items and bottled water to aid in this very cause.
Today, you can drop off donations at Handy Toyota and Chevrolet during regular business hours and other locations will become available soon. We will also be collecting at St. Albans City Elementary School, BFA St. Albans.
Throughout our history, Vermonters have constantly answered the call in times of uncertainty and this is certainly one of those times. Please take a moment over the next few days to donate, it’s the Vermont way.
